No Luck is
No Excuse is the ironic motto for Dota 2, a video game that a boy in
Manila was obsessed with. His body was discovered after having
sat lifeless for a day at the computer.
He had played for 49 hours
straight.
A neighbor
knew there was trouble when the boy failed to take any habitual trips to
pick up his favorite Cobra energy drink. The boy’s aunt was called and
they spotted the him through a window, dead in his room, DOTA 2 still
trying to entice the dead person at the terminal to play again. They
called police.
An investigation showed no signs of violence, but show that hunger and dehydration may have played a part.
This is the
latest in a rash of violent or deadly incidents in the Philippines
related to Dota. Is the aforementioned story a violent one? The game was
violent, but the boy died in the comfort of his home.
A 17-year-old Filipino
beat his grandmother to death after she interrupted his Dota game and
fussed at him. The kid doesn’t remember exactly what happened. Bloody
ceramic was found in the garbage, and a washbasin to clean the mess was
found near the body. This stuff is reminiscent of the Ozzy Osborn and
Eminem inspired murders and suicides in the United States. Some stuff
just seems to inspire evil.
In another account a 16 year old boy is suspected of killing an
11 year old boy because he hacked into his Dota online game account.
The stakes in this game get real, and the pressure to do something
about it seem enormous.
